Ever wanted to know or learn how to photograph the night sky?

Here is your chance to learn everything you need to know to start your journey into photographing the stars. The workshops are held during the 'astro season' which is between February and October. During this period the centre of our galaxy is visible, the Milky Way Core. Workshops are aligned with moon phases to allow us to photograph in the darkest possible skies, allowing you to witness the galactic dust of our galaxy, satellites, meteors and possibly Iridium flares.

What will you learn during the workshops?

  • Equipment Selection: The pro's and con's of various camera gear and lenses and what flaws to look out for.
  • The planning stage: Developing a plan through the use of various websites and apps regarding weather patterns, moon rise times, Galactic core rise times and locating various objects in the night sky.
  • What to pack: Equipment and accessories you will definitely need when photographing the night sky.
  • Setting up: Learn about the specific camera settings required as well as different ways of composing an image.
  • Types of Astrophotography: How to take images of the Milky Way core as well as star trails and timelapse photography
  • Post Processing: Processing images using Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom.

What is Included:

We will meet at our location prior to the shoot to thoroughly go over the theory of night sky photography. I will briefly discuss types of cameras and lens combinations and go into further detail about setting your camera up (how to focus at night, ISO settings, shutter speed, etc). We will proceed to our destination and I will coach you on composing your image as well as spending plenty of time practicing taking various images. I will then discuss the other ways to photography the night sky (timelapse and star trails). After we have taken our images I will show you how I edit images and how I use Photoshop and Adobe lightroom. The workshop time frame can be anywhere up to 6 hours depending on weather conditions.

If poor weather inhibits us from performing any photography, I will reschedule the workshop - nobody loses out! Generally workshops will be held on the Friday night/Saturday morning. The rescheduled day would be the Saturday night/Sunday morning or the week after pending your availability.

Private workshops are available at $300 for a one on one workshop whilst a private group workshop $500 - max 5 people.

"In the wee hours of last Saturday morning (8/4/2017) I attended an astrophotography workshop run by Nathan (Scenic Dreams Photography). I can highly recommend it to anyone wanting to try astro for the first time, or even more advanced photographers.

Somehow Nathan managed to find the right time astronomy-wise in all the weeks of rain we have had taking into account everyones availability & requirements - not to mention the skies, clouds, stars and moon. He was very knowledgable about the sky & all things photography related. His manner was very relaxed and helpful for a couple of beginners like us and he was happy to answer all our questions.

I was rapt with my first real astrophotography photos and would definitely sign up for further workshops from Scenic Dreams Photography.

"Hi Nathan,

I wanted to thank you so very much for the amazing Astro Photography workshop that I was able to attend early Saturday morning (11/03/2017). It was absolutely fantastic and I have learnt so much. I have been wanting to capture the beauty of the stars and the Milky Way for a significant amount of time and have never quite been able to do it. After just 30 minutes into your workshop, I was able to capture some absolutely amazing shots that I am so proud. Your expertise and guidance was brilliant and I can't wait to be able to complete another workshop soon. Thank you again!.. Kristen"

"Hi Nathan,
I would just like to say a BIG thank you for our session at Little Beach on 10 March 2017. It was a great (early) morning and thankfully the clouds cleared for a stunning Milky Way. I have received heaps of great comments about my Milky Way panorama.
Thank you for also coming back to my house and showing me processing of the files in Lightroom - I have learned heaps.
Good luck with your future Milky Way sessions, I have already recommended you to a few who are interested from our Social Sunrise crowd.
Cheers and thanks again,
David Rushworth."
